You all probably know about Kung Fu, karate, or any other martial arts club. But what about Tank Fu?
Yeah, Tank Fu, the art of controlling Tank as a self defend sport in your school. Well at least in Girl und Panzer, this Tank Fu thing is called as Sensha-do, and become one of main curriculum.
I almost dropping this series because the amount of nonsense that I need to swallow and digest first before reaching my understanding about this anime is too damn high. But thank God, I got enough patient and finally saw something that I always wanted to see in military Tank story.
And what is the cause for me to consider dropping this anime?
First, the moe characters… God damn it, why they must using this kind of character? I can accept the character design in Upotte, but not in Girl und Panzer. Moe girl wearing serafuku, controlling Tank, that’s bullshit man! But then, I decided to accept this because, may be the storyline is good.
Thank God again, they are designing a combat suit at the fifth episode. Although, they still wearing mini skirt, but at least I don’t have to see their school uniform.
Second, their Tank instructor somehow is a slacker. We are facing over than a dozen moe girls, inexperienced about this Tank thing, and they are need to find a clue in order to learn how operate this “steel chariot of doom“!
Come on! She’s the instructor, at least tell them how to operate the Tank! But nooooo, she just saying, let’s do a Tank combat training right away, WTF man! Those girls are confused as much as I am…
So lucky, at least the story writer is decide to gave us a scene where the first year students are using Internet to find the instruction or manual.
Just Google it, if it not in the first page, then it doesn’t exist
Third, in the opening of the first episode, we saw they’re in battle. And then flashed back to the scene before the battle. Normally, we’re expecting if they gonna shows us what is actually happen before the battle, and near the end of the episode, the show is resuming to the battle scene. But what we got? Nothing.
I was like, “Okay, maybe they need two episodes to explain those. Fine, let’s wait the second episode.”
So, in the second episode, we saw the girls are collecting scrapped tanks in junk yard/factory, cave in the middle of cliff, bushes, and under the lake.
But why would they do that?
There are several theory that I can think of. The school is decided if they got no money to buy the new Tanks, or they’re in hurry (and my best bet is, they’re in hurry).
And at the end of second episode, still no clue about what happen in the opening scene of episode 1. I swear, if I see no more explosion in episode 3, I will drop this anime.
And thank God, episode 3 did presented us a Tank battle scene. No regular anime bullshit that I need to swallow first before they continue the battle scene. And in this episode, finally I can see what happen exactly during the first episode battle.
And then… WTF!? A pink colored tank! A gold colored Tank! And a red colored Tank with flags! 3 of 5 Tanks are painted that way. I thought the reason why Tanks are painted in gray, desert, or other blending color are for camouflage purpose?
But again, this anime already so unrealistic to begin with, so why should I complain? If they’re decided to tell the enemy about their exact position and getting blown out, well it’s their choice
Also, the WTF momment about those tank color already at the first episode, but I forgot about that because too busy focusing on other thing.
However, it seems the anime is trying to show more realistic too. This is happened when one of the girl (a total tank maniac) are complaining about those pink, gold, red colored, and Kanji letters Tank.
Okay, episode 4 MUST continued the battle, don’t cut the scene!
And my wish is answered, they did continue the Tank battle from the beginning until the end of the first half.
On the second half, we just seeing drama about one of the character, but that’s fine. I already satisfied because the director did not cutting the Tank combat and putting it at the second half.
Not only that, in episode 4, we also seeing if the girls are entering Panzer tournament! YES! It mean, we’re going to see more Tank battle!
I was expecting if episode 5 will just a drama before the first tournament. They did shows us the drama but still gave us the Tank battle, and this is not a regular boring battle.
So, I decided if this anime will be in my watch list. Despite all of my complain, I see a prospect in this anime. The character design is not in my cup of tea, but I like the story and of course the Tank battle
Girl und Panzer main story is about Ooarai Girsl High School who is resurrecting their dead Tank martial art: Sensha-do, because of unknown reason, they need to do this or else.
For this reason, they are forcing Miho Nishizumi to participating the Sensha-do.
While Miho herself actually want to avoid this, because of her bad experience at her previous school. She’s transfered to this school because this school got no Sensha-Do.
In her new school, Miho met several girls.
Saori Takebe, a cheerful girl with a “whinnie-childish” voice.
Hana Isuzu, a calm girl with motherly voice who looking for a “strong flower”.
Yukari Akiyama, a Tank maniac. She’s obsessed with Tank and always brought her military backpack.
Mako Reizei, a gloomy and liveless girl. Despite her good grade, she’s always late to go to school almost everyday.
The student council is offering a 3x credits and other stuff for their participations. And surprisingly, more than a dozen girls are showing up.
After collecting the old busted Tanks from their previous generation, five teams are formed.
Team A, consist of Miho as the Commander (former Loader), Saori as the Radio Operator (former Commander), Hana as the Gunner (former Driver), Yukari as the Loader (former Gunner), and Mako as the Driver. They are using Panzer IV D Tank. A dark gray Tank with short barrel cannon. Later, team A will be renamed as Anko Team (Angler Fish Team)
Team B are consist of four Volley Ball players.
The reason why they’re joining Sensha-do because they want to resurrecting their Volley Ball club. This team is using Type 89 Tank. Their Tank is painted with volley ball icon and Kanji letters. Later, team B will be renamed as Duck Team, a duck icon also painted on the Tank.
Team C are consist of historical girls. They are passionate with histories, and named based on the historical figures, like Caesar from Julius Caesar, the Emperor of Rome.
No information why they’re joining the Sensha Do, but probably they want to experienced a war using Tank battle.
This team is using StuG III Tank. A low profile Tank without hinge to rotate the turret position. This kind of Tank need to turn it’s body in order to rotate the turret. And thus, causing a problem because they need more time to aiming the target. And this Tank cannot return fire when chased or attacked from side way.
This team also one of the team with “high profile color scheme” tank. They painted the Tank with red and added four flags on it (and end up getting shot).
The Tank also written, veni vidi vici. And translated by one of them as: “I came, I saw, I shoot!”
Later, this team are renamed as Hippo Team. Probably because of this is the only Tank that can do powerful damage with the cannon.
Team D are consist of first year students.
There are six of them, making them as the most packed team in the club. No information why they’re joining the Sensha-do. But probably because of 3x credits offer, or it just their curiosity. After all, first year student need to join in a club.
This team is using M3 Tank, and they are painted the Tank in pink.
Later, this team are renamed as Rabbit Team with pink rabbit is holding knives in both hand as the icon.
Team E are consist of 3 girls, they are the Student Council.
They still not telling the other about the reason in resurrecting Sensha-do. Their gunner, Momo is very restricted girl in daily life but starting to changed into trigger happy when inside the Tank and firing the cannon.
They painted their Tank into gold colored tank, but later, they’re repainted back into the original color.
This team are renamed as Kame Team (Turtle Team).
The opening song is sung by Choucho, a famous NicoNico Douga singer. Mostly she’s singing the Vocaloid songs before starting as a pro singer.
Also, Saori Takebe’s voice actress is Ai Kayano. Also known as Menma’s voice actress too in Ano Hana. That’s why her childish voice is remind me of Menma. And, Saori is not the center character but somehow she got a lot of dialogue.
There are alot of Girl und Panzer mechandise. And the one that makes me interested is the Tank model kit. But surprisingly, the model kit is very expensive. So probably I will just buy the regular military Tank, because all Tanks in Girl und Panzer are based on real Tank.
I recommend you to watch this anime if you interested in Tank battle. Of course, this anime might not suitable for anyone who demanding a realistic stuff in every aspect.
You will see a gigantic carrier ship with a city on it.
You will see a cargo ship is dropping a Tank with parachute, and they not even worried that much when that Tank is crashing and running over the Principal car.
You will see if driving a military Tank and firing an empty shell in your neighbor is a common.
You will see if they can use a public and private properties as their war zone.
The owner of private property does not mind at all when a Tank is crashing into their building.
You will see if those girls can control the Tank and firing the cannon with “nice” accuracy during their first try.
You will see if they can grab the cannon ammo so easy, despite how small their bodies are.
And other that I forgot to mention it…
Ladios Sopp is Emperor Amaterasu, the ruler of Delta Belune planet from The Five Star Stories manga. He promising his future wife, Fatima Lachesis, to build a golden robot (Mortar Headd) and displayed during their wedding. This golden Mortar Head name is, Knight of Gold.
Takumi is the main character from manga and anime Initial D. A story about illegal racing (just imagine The Fast and Furious), and he’s good in drifting.
